Warning: that old thermal paste can cause more trouble than it's worth

Had a client's gaming rig in Denver overheating after a simple RAM upgrade. The choice was between cleaning off the ancient, crusty paste and reapplying with my tube of Arctic MX-4 or just trying to reseat the cooler as-is. I spent the extra 10 minutes to do a full clean and fresh application, and the CPU temps dropped by 18 degrees Celsius under load. Has anyone else had a simple maintenance task turn into a major fix like that?

Ever feel like a tiny tube of paste is the only thing standing between you and a total meltdown? I've definitely spent more time scraping off old gunk than the actual repair took.

My buddy Mark spent two hours cleaning thermal paste out of his Ryzen 5's tiny grooves with a toothpick. He said it looked like a crime scene with all the coffee filters and rubbing alcohol. The actual remount took like five minutes.

Honestly, 18 degrees sounds like a lot. Was the cooler maybe not seated right the first time? I've reused old paste in a pinch and the temp change was maybe 3 or 4 degrees, not enough to panic over.
