Hot take: power screeds are not the shortcut everyone claims
Every finisher I know around here keeps saying you gotta buy a power screed or you're losing money. I say different. Two months ago I did a 1,200 square foot driveway in Tempe and the guy I hired to run his screed left a low spot near the garage apron that cost me half a day and two bags of mix to fix. My 12 foot magnesium straightedge would have read that grade fine the first time. I've poured about 40 slabs in the last three years and I get straighter work with a straightedge and a good eye. A machine moves fast but it don't feel the grade under it. It just hangs on the pipe and rides. If your base is off by a half inch, the screed don't care and neither does the guy running it. How many of you all are actually getting flatter finishes with power screeds, or are you just getting done quicker and patching later?
