Switched from a wood float to a magnesium float on this 900 sq ft driveway and the finish got worse, not better

Did a pour in Tempe back in March and tried a mag float for the first time because two guys on the crew swear by them, but my edges came out grainy and I had to fight the cream the whole time. Am I just not holding it right, or is mag float overrated for flatwork in dry heat? What are you all running on a big slab when the wind picks up?
