Tried adding a little dish soap to my mix water on a 10x12 slab last Friday, and it went bad
I read somewhere that a few drops of Dawn in the mix water makes the concrete flow easier, so I tried it on a small slab pour behind a garage in Meridian. The finish looked great at first but two days later the surface had a chalky white haze that would not come off with a float, and I had to grind the whole thing. Has anyone else messed with additives in the water and regretted it, or did I just use too much?
That chalky haze is usually called efflorescence and it happens when extra water in the mix pulls free lime up to the surface as it dries. Soap makes the mix wetter than it looks, which is why your finish felt easy but the slab was actually sitting there with too much water in it. The soap itself probably was not the whole problem, the extra water was.
