My buddy swore the moon landing was faked and I laughed at him for years

He told me back in 2018 that the shadows in the Apollo photos don't line up right, and I just rolled my eyes. Then I actually looked at the NASA images myself and saw what he meant about the multiple light sources. Am I missing something or does that weird shadow stuff actually mean anything?

Wait, so your buddy was actually onto something real?

Oh man, I gotta jump in here. I've seen this shadow thing come up a bunch and people get it twisted. The whole "multiple light sources" thing isn't really correct because there's only one light source - the sun. But the ground itself is reflecting light back up onto the astronauts and the lander, so you get these weird crisscross shadows that look like they come from different directions. It's the same reason you can take a photo outside on a sunny day and still see details in the shadows of a tree because the sky is acting like a giant softbox. Your buddy probably saw that and assumed it was some Hollywood lighting trick, but it's actually just basic physics happening on a dusty surface with no atmosphere. NASA even did experiments in the 60s with sand and lights to prove this exact thing works in a vacuum.

Facts. The ground reflection thing is real, you can literally test it yourself with a flashlight and a piece of paper. People see those Apollo photos and forget the lunar surface is basically bright gray dust that bounces light everywhere. Same reason you can read a book in the shade on a sunny day. The sky acts like a giant reflector even when it's clear. Your buddy probably just never thought about it that way.
