Rant: The cave tour guide in Carlsbad made me question everything

Went down to Carlsbad Caverns last weekend on a whim. The guide kept saying the formations are 500,000 years old, but the more I looked at the layering, the less it added up. I even counted the rings on a broken stalagmite near the path, there were way too many for that number. Not saying the park service is lying, but has anyone else noticed how the official timelines always seem to shrink when you ask about moisture levels? Just felt like a lot of hand waving for something so visible.

Have you ever actually watched water drip in there, or just listened to the script? The rings don't lie, but the tour guides have to stick to the official story, you know? Maybe the real number just sounds less impressive for the gift shop.
