Spent 2 years arguing about a flat map before I checked who was paying for the debate
I used to get in fights online every week about whether the earth is a globe. Then one night I clicked on the profile of a guy I'd been arguing with for hours and saw he ran a survival gear shop. Every one of his posts ended with a link to a $40 water filter. I started checking the other big accounts too, and most of them had a book, a store, or a donation page attached. Now I wonder how many of these fights are real and how many are just ads. Anyone else notice the loudest voices all have something to sell?
Man, this hits close to home. I got into it with some guy on youtube comments for like three days about moon landing footage and then found out his whole channel was just videos pushing a $200 "radiation detox" kit. The part that gets me is how do you even tell the difference anymore between a true believer and someone running a grift? Like once you see the store link do you just assume everything they say after that is fake, or could they actually believe it AND make money off it? And does it change how you argue with regular people who just have a bad take and nothing to sell?
