DAE spend way too long trying to get perfect highlights before realizing your sectioning was the problem?

I was splitting hair into these thick, uneven chunks for like 2 years (you know, just eyeballing it) until a stylist at the shop next door watched me for 10 seconds and pointed out my back sections were twice the size of my front ones, right? Has anyone else had a basic technique suddenly click after someone showed you the right way?
