Just had a client, a retired nurse, tell me she stopped coloring her hair because the salon smell gave her migraines. It's making me rethink my whole ventilation setup.

Our new exhaust fan cut the smell by half, like @bennett.vera said.

Yeah, that's a real thing. Ammonia and some of the other chemicals are brutal for sensitive people. I ended up putting in a proper exhaust fan right at the color bar, the kind that actually pulls air outside, not just recirculates it. Also, keep the color mixing capped as much as possible and have a good air purifier running in the waiting area. It made a huge difference for my clients who get headaches.

That point about ammonia is a good start, but it's actually the PPD and other developers in permanent color that are the bigger trigger for migraines and breathing issues. Ammonia is just the smell you notice most. A proper exhaust fan is the right move, but it needs to pull from the floor level where those heavier fumes settle, not just up high. I switched to low-ammonia colors and it helped a ton, but the ventilation is still key.
