My mentor's bleach advice nearly ruined a client's hair
My old boss at the salon in Austin told me to always use 20 volume on fine hair, no exceptions. I followed that for 2 years until a client came in with box dye buildup and wanted a full lift. The 20 volume barely got her past orange, so I had to charge her for a second session and explain the mess. She was cool about it, but I learned to test strand every single time instead of trusting a blanket rule. Anyone else had a mentor rule that backfired on a real head?

Oh, I get it, but your mentor's rule wasn't totally wrong, just too broad. Fine hair usually handles 20 volume fine, but the real issue is that box dye buildup changes everything, so the blanket rule should've come with a "unless there's prior color" warning. You're totally right that strand testing is the only way to actually know what's happening, that's the lesson we all learn the hard way.
