My mentor's bleach advice nearly ruined a client's hair

My old boss at the salon in Austin told me to always use 20 volume on fine hair, no exceptions. I followed that for 2 years until a client came in with box dye buildup and wanted a full lift. The 20 volume barely got her past orange, so I had to charge her for a second session and explain the mess. She was cool about it, but I learned to test strand every single time instead of trusting a blanket rule. Anyone else had a mentor rule that backfired on a real head?

Fine hair usually handles 20 volume fine, but the real issue is that box dye buildup changes everything, so the blanket rule should've come with a "unless there's prior color" warning.
