Showerthought: My client in her 70s taught me more about hair care in one visit than beauty school did

I was doing a perm on Margaret last Tuesday, a retired teacher from the local high school who comes in every 6 weeks. She mentioned she only uses cool water to rinse her hair and has never owned a blow dryer in her life. Made me realize I spend half my time at work pushing products that fight heat damage when the real solution is just... don't use heat. Anyone else have an older client drop wisdom that totally flipped your approach?

The part about "just don't use heat" really hit me. My aunt is 68 and has the most beautiful silver hair I've ever seen. She washes it with cold water and lets it air dry on a towel, nothing else. Meanwhile I'm over here with a 450 degree flat iron wondering why my ends look like straw. It's almost funny how much money we spend on heat protectants and repair treatments when the real fix is so simple. Your client Margaret sounds like she figured out the secret decades ago.

Is using a flat iron at 450 really that bad though? I mean it's hot but most of us aren't trying to fry our hair off.

Woah, hold on, 450? That's like... literally the highest setting on most irons. I mean, idk about you but that sounds like you're basically cooking your hair. My sister used to do that and her hair would literally sizzle if she held it too long in one spot. It's wild to me that people think that's normal when your aunt's 68 and has gorgeous silver hair from just cold water and air drying. Maybe it's just me but I feel like we've all been brainwashed by the beauty industry into thinking we need all this heat and product.
