The $12 clipper blade I almost threw away is now my favorite tool

I bought a cheapo clipper blade from a beauty supply over in Arlington about 6 months ago and it was so dull right out of the package I almost tossed it in the trash. Figured I'd try sharpening it myself with a stone I had laying around - what did I have to lose? After about 15 minutes of careful work it cuts like butter now, even better than my professional brands. Has anyone else had luck reviving cheap equipment instead of just replacing it?

You put in the work on something worthless and it becomes your best tool" - that's exactly it. That line got me thinking though, @gibson.sarah. You ever notice how cheap stuff is often made with softer metal? Makes it easier to sharpen but also means it dulls faster. That pruning shears you fixed up, is it still holding an edge after a few uses or does it need a touch up every time? I found that with my cheap clipper blade, the first sharpening got it perfect but now I gotta hit it with the stone every couple weeks to keep it right. Still beats spending forty bucks on a brand name blade that goes dull just as fast. Maybe that's the real trade off - you save money upfront but trade your time on the back end.

Agree with you both on this. There's something satisfying about taking a tool that everyone else would throw out and making it work right again. I've done similar with an old set of kitchen knives I found at a flea market, and they cut better than anything I could buy new now.

Man, that's such a good feeling when you can save something from the trash like that. I've got a set of pruning shears I found at a yard sale for two bucks that were totally rusted shut. Spent a Sunday afternoon with some oil and a wire brush, now they cut cleaner than anything you'd buy new at the hardware store. It's like the cheap stuff just needs a little love to get going. Putting in the work on something that's basically worthless to everyone else, and it turns into your best tool - that's the stuff that makes you feel like you're getting away with something.
