TIL I've been sectioning hair for highlights all wrong

Honestly, I watched a new stylist at our salon in Austin use a diagonal back section instead of the standard horizontal, and the blend was way smoother. How do you decide on your sectioning patterns for different face shapes?

Wait, is it that deep though? I mean, it's just hair, it grows back. Maybe it's just me but I feel like people overthink this stuff. As long as it looks good and the client is happy, who cares if the section was diagonal or a zigzag or whatever.

Right? It's crazy how one small change can make such a big difference. I had the same thing happen when I saw someone use vertical sections around the face instead of the usual triangle for a money piece. It just melts into the rest of the hair so much better. Now I always look at how the hair falls naturally before I even pick up a comb. A round face might need a different pattern than a long face just to frame it right. You almost have to forget the rule book sometimes.

That diagonal back section in Austin is a game changer. @davis.adam is right about following how the hair falls, so for a square jaw, would you ever start with a center vertical part instead of side to guide those face-framing pieces?
