A rigger in Houston said 'let the load tell you,' and it's stuck in my head
Was grabbing lunch near the yard in Houston and overheard a rigger with maybe 25 years on him tell a younger guy 'stop guessing, let the load tell you.' I've been running a 60 ton Tadano boom truck for 3 years and I'll admit I still catch myself rushing the tag line instead of watching how the load swings. Does anyone here work by feel like that, or do you stick hard to the numbers on the chart and ignore the gut thing?
That line about watching how the load swings hits close to home. When you say let the load tell you, what are you actually FEELING for in those first few inches of pick? I run a 60 ton too and I've noticed the boom tip tells me more than the chart does on a long reach, like when the load starts to walk sideways before the tag line even goes tight. Curious what specific cues you watch for, the bounce in the cable, the way the block hangs, or something in the outrigger pads?
