Hot take: most guys set their outriggers way too narrow on soft ground
I watched a guy set up a 55 ton in a gravel lot off Route 9 in Jersey last week and he had his pads maybe 6 inches from the edge of a soft spot. He told me close was fine since the chart said he was good, but the chart don't know about that gravel. Pads need room and cribbing, not just clearance on the load chart. What's your rule for pad placement when the ground looks sketchy?
You think that chart's ever seen a Jersey gravel lot in April? The load chart is doing its little math while the ground underneath is quietly planning its betrayal. Six inches from a soft spot is like standing six inches from the edge of a pool and calling yourself a swimmer, technically you're close but the water don't care. Those pads need to sit on something that won't squirt out sideways the second the boom swings, that means cribbing big enough to spread the load out past the soft stuff. Gravel off Route 9 sounds like it's been getting chewed to mush since the seventies anyway.
