I was setting my outriggers on gravel for years until a guy in Phoenix asked why I wasn't using steel plates.

Gravel can shift and cause a dangerous sink. Steel plates spread the weight out on soft ground. That guy in Phoenix gave you solid advice.

Wait, did @stellachen just call gravel "soft ground"? Gravel is the opposite of soft, it's the stuff you put down to make soft ground hard.

Honestly I saw a video where they called gravel "unstable ground" which makes more sense. @stellachen is right about the shifting risk, it's not about being soft like mud. The steel plate thing is a common fix for that sinking feeling.
