Rant: A 30 year operator in Houston made me redo my whole rigging setup and I'm still mad he was right
I was rigging a 12,000 lb HVAC unit on a roof in Houston last Tuesday and this old operator with 30 years in walked up and just stared at my slings for a minute. He asked why I had my chokers crossed on a two point pick instead of running them straight to the hook, and I gave him the usual answer about balance. He said 'you're fighting the load, not working with it' and made me re-rig it with a spreader bar instead. Cut my tagline pull in half and the load came up dead level on the first try. I've been doing it the crossed way for 8 years now and nobody ever corrected me. How many of you were taught crossed chokers on two point picks, or was that just my journeyman being lazy?
Ran into the exact same thing with a 9,000 lb RTU last year and the old timer showed me the spreader bar trick too. My first journeyman taught me the crossed choker method and I ran it for years without a single problem, so I never questioned it. Funny how the guys who've been out there the longest can fix in five minutes what we've been doing wrong for a decade.
