Tested a load cell on a rental 80 ton, numbers were off by 300 lbs

Rented an 80 ton for a week on a Seattle site. The load cell said we were under, but the crane felt heavier. Checked with the truck scale, 300 lbs off. Calibrate your cells, even on rentals. Anyone else trust their cell over feel and regret it?

Wait, you actually checked it against a truck scale? That's the part most guys skip. I used to be one of those "trust the cell, it's digital so it's right" guys, but then I had a rental come up 400 lbs light on a pick that felt way too heavy in the seat. Ran it to a scale and yeah, it was off. After that I started doing a quick check with a known weight on any rental before I trust it for anything close to the limit. It's a pain, but 300 lbs on an 80 ton is nothing to sneeze at when you're near the edge. Better to find out on the ground than in the air.
