Vent: A new guy on site said he could 'eyeball' the load chart

I was on a job in Tacoma last week and heard a greenhorn tell his spotter he didn't need to check the chart for a lift, he could just guess the weight. The spotter shut him down right there, which was good. It just got me thinking about how one lazy moment can put a whole crew at risk. What's the dumbest shortcut you've ever heard someone try to take on a lift?

Nah man, sometimes you just gotta trust your gut. Charts are for people who overthink everything.

Trusting your gut sounds great until it leads you wrong. Charts just show what actually happened, not what you feel might happen. Why ignore real data for a hunch?

It's the same reason people ignore weather reports and get caught in the rain. Data feels cold, but a hunch feels like your own idea. We just like betting on ourselves, even when the odds are bad.
