Hot take: I dropped $80 on a 'premium' prompt generator site last month and it was a total waste.
The prompts were all super generic stuff like 'write about a haunted house' or 'a character finds a key', nothing I couldn't get for free. I felt like a fool after the first week. Has anyone found a good source for actually unique story starters?

That $80 is a tough lesson. Did the site at least give you any prompts based on your own story ideas, or was it just a static list of random scenarios?

That "tough lesson" line reminds me of my buddy who paid for a fancy writing course. It gave him a huge list of generic prompts that just made him feel more stuck. He ended up doing what alice_hart said, just writing a silly first line on a napkin, and that actually broke the block.

It was a static list, river320, total junk. What worked for me was just opening a blank doc and writing the worst first line I could think of. Like "the toaster was haunted" or "my cat solved the murder." Once I had something, even a bad something, it got easier to build from there. The blank page was the real problem, not a lack of ideas.
