I finally tried prompts from new social media trends, but they confuse me.

Lately, I've seen a lot of writing prompts based on viral TikTok stories. For example, one prompt asked to write a short story from the view of a meme character. It feels hard to make these deep or meaningful. Another common one is about AI friends, which is weird to write about. I used to love simple prompts like 'write about a lost key,' but now everything is tied to online culture. How do you guys adapt to these changing prompts? Do you stick to classic ideas or jump on new trends?

Is it just me or do half these trends make you feel old and confused? I tried writing from a meme's point of view and my story was basically just a confused grandma, idk. I mostly just stick to the lost key type stuff now.

Actually, memes follow rules too, they're just new ones you haven't learned yet.

Totally get what you mean, it feels like you need a translator for some of these trends. I tried one about an AI friend and it just felt so hollow and weird to write. @patriciah51 you nailed it, I also end up feeling like a confused grandma sometimes! What worked for me was taking the CORE idea of the trend prompt but putting it in a normal situation. Like instead of a meme character, I wrote about an old garden gnome watching families change over the years. You can use the new trend as a jumping off point but make it your own thing.
