I used to think writing prompts were just for kids in school

My friend in Portland convinced me to try one about a character finding a key in a library book, and I ended up writing a full short story from it. What's a prompt that surprised you by actually working?

Honestly my buddy got stuck with a prompt about a talking vending machine that only sold weird regrets. Tbh it sounded so dumb we all laughed at it. He ended up writing this dark little piece about a guy buying a can of "should've called your dad" and it was actually really sad. Ngl it completely changed my mind about how a simple idea can go deep.

Wow, a "what if your mirror lied" prompt hooked me.

Actually that mirror prompt sounds kinda played out though. Feels like every writing group has someone trying to be deep with a creepy reflection. What makes a simple idea actually good?
