My character's diary entry ate up 2 hours of my writing time in Seattle

I was working on a prompt about a ghost haunting a library, and the diary entry I wrote for the ghost turned into 900 words of backstory nobody asked for. It took me 2 hours to realize I was just avoiding the actual scene where the ghost talks to the living character. I cut it down to 3 sentences and moved on, but now I'm wondering if anyone else spends way too long on side details instead of the main conflict. Has a prompt ever sent you down a similar rabbit hole that made the final draft worse?
