Spent $27 on a prompt deck at a used bookstore in Omaha and it kinda burned me
Everyone keeps saying prompt decks are a great way to break a dry spell, but mine mostly just felt like homework. I paid $27 at Jackson Street Booksellers for a 52-card deck of "story starters," and 40 of the cards were stuff like "write about a door" with zero twist to work with. I get more out of one good sentence pulled from a random news story than I did from the whole deck. Curious if anyone has a prompt deck that actually pulls its weight, or if I should just donate this one back.
Jackson Street is usually solid too, which makes it worse. But this is why the card decks never work for me, they're built to be safe so they can sell to anybody, and safe prompts give you safe writing. The one good sentence you pulled from a news story worked because it had a real person and a real mess in it, not "write about a door" with nothing behind it. If you want the deck to earn its keep, deal yourself two cards at once and force a link between them, door plus lost keys plus a stranger who knows your name, and suddenly you got a scene instead of homework. Otherwise yeah, donate it back and keep clipping sentences out of the paper, that costs nothing and hits harder.
