Spent 4 months stuck on one prompt about a lighthouse keeper and his dog, finally figured out the issue last week
Back in January I started writing a prompt about a lighthouse keeper who talks to his dog every night. I thought it would take a weekend. I rewrote that thing 23 times, and each draft felt worse than the one before it. Last week I read it out loud to my wife in the kitchen and she said the dog had no reason to stay. She was right. I had built this whole setup about the keeper's guilt but never gave the dog a job to do. Once I made the dog the one who finds the ships in the fog, the prompt wrote itself in about 20 minutes. Has anyone else had a prompt where one missing detail held the whole thing hostage for months?
