That beta reader in Denver made me delete my whole first chapter

I had this opening with 3 pages of describing the fog on a mountain, thought it was so moody and deep. A beta reader in Denver wrote one line back: 'I almost put the book down' and then explained how the fog was doing zero work. I rewrote it to start on the character arguing with her landlord over a 40 dollar deposit, and the whole scene just clicked. Has anyone else had a critique that killed a chunk of their manuscript, and how did you handle rebuilding around it?
