Freelance platform vs local clients, local wins by a mile
I spent like 6 months hustling on Upwork and Fiverr, getting paid $15 for logo tweaks that took me 3 hours. Then I put up flyers at three coffee shops in Portland and got a local bakery owner to hire me for a full brand package, $800 up front. The difference was night and day. Online clients ghost you after the deposit and expect 47 revisions. Local folks actually talk to you on the phone and respect your time because they see you in person. I mean, maybe it's just my experience, but the communication alone made the whole thing less stressful. Has anyone else ditched the big platforms for local gigs and noticed the same? Or am I missing something about how to make those sites work?

Local all the way. Upwork made me feel like I was begging for scraps half the time. You spend hours writing proposals and then get nothing back. The coffee shop route is way more real. People look you in the eye and pay you like a human being. The bakery owner even introduced me to two other small businesses nearby. Freelance sites are just a race to the bottom.
