Had a chat with my buddy's dad that flipped my approach to editing

I was helping my friend Dave move some furniture last Saturday and his dad Ron, who used to edit for a local news station in Buffalo, started talking about how he always trims the first 30 seconds off every video clip. He said beginners leave too much dead air at the start because they're warming up. I thought about my own content and realized I'm guilty of that same thing, leaving in pauses and hesitations that just bore people. So I tried his method on a 3 minute video I posted Tuesday and the retention time jumped way up. Anyone else gotten advice from someone outside the creator space that actually worked better than the usual tips?

That "warming up" thing reminds me of my buddy Tom who edits his golf videos.

Tom must spend a lot of time in front of the computer to get those videos just right. But does he actually save time with all that editing, or does he just enjoy playing around with the footage? Sometimes I wonder if people use editing to hide their bad swings or missed shots, or if it's just for fun. What does Tom usually get out of it, a smoother video or a way to remember his best moments? I've never edited my own golf videos, but I bet it helps if you're trying to improve your game.
