Heard someone trash paid plugins for Creators Hub, now I'm doubting my setup

I was at the Friday meetup downtown and this guy goes off about how paid plugins are a scam, said he runs everything on free tools and gets better results. I've spent about $140 on three plugins this month alone for scheduling and analytics. Made me think, am I just paying for convenience? My numbers are up 15% since I switched from manual posting, but maybe that's just the time change. I can't tell if his take is sour grapes or real advice. Anyone else tried going full free after paying for tools? What did you lose or gain?
