I finally stopped overediting my videos after one harsh comment
Someone told me my travel vlog felt "choppy and exhausting" because I cut every single pause. At first I got defensive, but I went back and watched my video from last month with fresh eyes. They were right - I was removing natural breathing room and making the whole thing feel rushed. Now I leave in those 2-3 second silences between scenes, and my last video actually held viewers past the 2 minute mark. Has anyone else had to unlearn a bad editing habit?

The 47 second mark was my killer, I kept cutting out those tiny pauses in my cooking videos and someone finally pointed out it felt like I was racing through a recipe. I went back and watched my old stuff and yeah, I was cutting out the moment where I actually let the butter melt before adding the next ingredient. Now I leave in those little beats where you can hear the sizzle or see the steam rising, and people actually comment about how relaxing my videos feel now. It's wild how we think we're helping by removing every single gap, but we're really just making the whole thing feel like a caffeine rush (and not in a good way).

Latch onto that idea about letting people see the process. The best part of your cooking videos is probably watching the butter melt or hearing that sizzle because those small moments are what make it feel real and lived in. Taking out every pause just strips away the texture that makes someone want to stick around and watch.

Ha! That's like when you think you're doing someone a favor by cleaning their house and they're like "where are all my piles of stuff?" @the_oscar is living proof that sometimes the messy bits are actually the good bits, right?
