Rant: The "post 3 times a day" advice that wrecked my channel

A guy in the analytics forum swore posting three times daily was the only way to grow, so I followed it for six weeks straight. My engagement actually dropped because I was flooding my feed with half-baked clips nobody wanted, and I lost about 200 subscribers who got annoyed by the spam. Has anyone else been burned by generic frequency rules that ignore your actual audience?
