The difference between a free and a paid newsletter platform for my project
I ran my small history blog's newsletter on a free service for about six months, sending to around 500 people. Last month, I switched to a paid plan on a different platform for $29 a month. The open rates jumped from 18% to over 40% because the deliverability and formatting tools are just better. Some folks argue free tools are fine when you're starting, but the data shows the paid service gets your work in front of more eyes. For those who've made a similar switch, was the cost worth it for you?

You mentioned your open rates jumping because the deliverability tools are better. That's the whole thing, right? It's like the difference between a cheap paintbrush and a good one. You can try to paint your house with the free one, but it leaves streaks and takes twice as long. Paying for the right tool isn't just a cost, it's what lets you actually do the job you set out to do.

Honestly the open rate jump was mostly from better subject lines.

Yeah, and @the_jordan is right about the tool being the paintbrush. But nobody's talking about the painter's hand. You can have the best subject line tool in the world, but if your list is full of old emails from people who don't care anymore, you're just polishing a brick. It's like sending a perfect flyer to a mailbox at a house that's been empty for years. The tool helps, but the list itself has to be alive.
