A friend said my password habits were basically a welcome mat for hackers

He pointed out I was using the same basic word with different numbers for everything, which is super easy to crack. I finally set up a password manager and made a unique 12 character passphrase for each account. How long did it take you guys to get used to using one?

Took me a solid week to stop feeling annoyed every time I opened my laptop. The auto fill felt weird at first, like I was giving up control. Now I can't imagine going back to remembering all that junk myself. The peace of mind knowing everything is actually secure is totally worth the hassle.

Doesn't this happen with every new tool that actually helps? We fight the change until it just becomes part of the background.

Yeah that "peace of mind" feeling is real. I used to keep a sticky note on my monitor with all my passwords, which is basically asking for trouble. The hardest part was trusting the auto-fill on my phone. I'd still try to type it out of habit and mess it up. Just force yourself to use it for a few days straight, even for dumb stuff like logging into the news site. It clicks pretty fast.
