Got a call from my 78 year old neighbor last night about a "refund" on her computer

Helen called me around 9 PM saying Microsoft called to tell her they detected a virus and needed $300 to fix it. She was actually sitting there with the remote access software page open and her credit card in hand. I drove over and walked her through hanging up and blocking the number. These scammers are targeting older folks hard. Has anyone found a good way to explain this stuff to elderly relatives that actually sticks?

It's the same playbook as those "your car warranty is expiring" robocalls. Old folks are polite and trust authority, so scammers exploit that every single day.

Yo seriously THIS. My grandpa almost fell for a similar scam last month, some dude called pretending to be from his bank saying there was fraud on his account. He was literally about to read his card number out loud before I walked in and grabbed the phone. It's wild how these scammers know exactly when to call and what to say to sound legit. They prey on that whole "respect your elders" authority thing and it makes me sick.

That whole "respect your elders" thing gets abused everywhere, not just on phones.
