Installing smart home gadgets prompted me to alter the initial passwords...
It's a simple step that's often forgotten, but it keeps others from getting in... Took me a minute and now my setup is tighter.

Initial password change? Still vulnerable to a hard reset.

Yeah, that's exactly it. It's like buying a fancy alarm system but leaving the window unlocked. Companies love to put on a big show about security steps, but if the reset button is right there in the open, what's the point. You see this with all kinds of stuff, like those "secure" websites that still send your password in a plain text email. They spend so much time making the first step look solid, but the backup plan is full of holes. It feels less about keeping things safe and more about having something to point at when things go wrong. Just makes the whole process feel like a waste of everyone's time.

Ever run into a system where the so called "security" is just for show? It's honestly wild how many places set up a password change just to leave the back door wide open for a reset. Makes the whole first step feel like a complete waste of time. You really hit the nail on the head about the fake sense of safety some companies love to sell. Drives me up the wall.
