Just realized my VPN was lying to me for 6 months

I signed up for a free VPN service back in January after seeing ads everywhere, and it worked fine until I ran a leak test last Tuesday on a whim. Turns out my real IP was showing the whole time, so all those "secure" browsing sessions on the coffee shop wifi in Austin were basically naked. Has anyone else caught a VPN doing this, and what paid service actually passed a leak test for you?

Free VPNs gotta make money somehow, and selling your data is the oldest trick in the book. You basically got what you paid for, a false sense of safety with a side of free wifi.
