My brother-in-law the IT guy told me to use the same password for everything so I wouldn't forget it
Six months later someone got into my email and reset my bank password and I lost $400 before I caught it. Has anyone else had a supposedly smart relative give them terrible security advice?

Ha! Well congrats to your IT guy for giving you the worst advice since "just smile more at the creepy guy at the bar." My cousin who "knows computers" told me to keep all my passwords in a text file on my desktop called "passwords." Real genius move. I hope your brother-in-law at least bought you dinner after you got cleaned out, though knowing IT folks he probably just blamed you for clicking something.

Use a password manager instead. Way safer than a text file.
