Shoutout to security keys over SMS codes for my Gmail, the difference was real
I got locked out of my Gmail for 3 days back in January because my phone died and the SMS code went to a number I no longer had. That was the push I needed. I bought two cheap USB security keys for $25 each, set one up on my account and put the spare in a drawer at my brother's place in Tucson. The difference from text codes is night and day. Texts can get intercepted or hit a dead phone line, but the key is a physical thing that has to be plugged in and touched, so nobody gets in without it. Setup on Gmail took maybe 10 minutes and I didn't need any tech background. If you've been putting off moving your main email off SMS codes, what stopped you, laziness or not knowing which key to buy?
Whoa, a spare key in a drawer in Tucson? That is some next level backup planning and I love it. My lazy self just has both keys sitting in the same desk drawer like a genius, so if my place ever floods I'm toast.
