Update: Getting locked out of my email changed my view on backup codes
I used to ignore them, but now I keep them safe offline.

Totally get that. I keep mine in a small fireproof safe bolted to a shelf, makes me feel way better about it.

See, this shows how people handle risk differently. Everyone has their own line. Some won't keep a spare key outside, but they leave social media open on shared devices. Others drive without seatbelts but freak out if their phone dies. My neighbor has a guard dog but uses 'password123' for everything. It's just what scares you more.
