Warning: my router's firmware got hit by a bad update and killed my whole home network for 9 hours
Two Saturdays ago I clicked update on my router's admin page like I always do, and 10 minutes later every device in the house was offline. My kid was mid online class, my wife was on a work call, and I sat there staring at a blinking orange light for what felt like forever. Back in the day you just pulled the power cord and waited, but this thing needed a factory reset, which meant redoing every setting by hand. I had 14 devices to reconnect, plus port forwards for the printer and a guest network I set up for my parents. It took me from 8am to almost 5pm to get everything back, and I had to dig out an old USB cable to reflash the firmware because the web page wouldn't load. Lesson for me is to export the config file before any update, which I never did until now. Does anyone keep a printed list of their router settings just in case this happens to you?
