A guy at the Charlotte airport said my punchline was the setup, and he was right
I kept doing "why did the scarecrow win an award" and getting polite groans, till this stranger pointed out I was burying "outstanding in his field" at the end instead of landing on it. Now I front-load the pun and my 9 year old actually laughs, so what joke have you been telling wrong for years?
Man, the whole "punchline first" thing is messing with my head. Do you still keep the question at the front, like "why did the scarecrow win an award, because he was outstanding in his field," or do you just drop the pun cold and let people catch up on their own? I tried flipping one of my dad jokes and it came out like a fortune cookie that hates you. Curious how much setup you can actually cut before it stops being a joke at all.
