I finally won a round in the Dad Joke Showdown after 8 weeks of trying

I used to just throw out random puns about food or animals, but they always fell flat (you know, like my jokes). Last week I switched it up and told a joke about why the scarecrow won an award - because he was outstanding in his field. My wife Deb at the dinner table actually laughed, and the group gave me 12 votes, my first win ever. Anyone else find that timing matters more than the joke itself in these contests?

Ha, yeah I get what you're saying. I actually read an article about dad joke competitions getting serious at state fairs, and people really care about the puns. The winner usually gets like a trophy or a gift card, so I guess there is something to win besides just the pride. But honestly, the real win is seeing everyone groan together, that's the whole point. So yeah, it's more about the fun of it than the actual prize.
