Killing the setup kills the punchline

I see people post their dad joke of the week and the setup is longer than the grocery list I hand my wife. Keep it to one line, 10 words max. How are we supposed to vote on punniest when I'm asleep before the punchline hits?

Honestly I used to be the guy who thought longer setups were funnier cause you build more suspense. But after reading this I totally get it, a good punchline doesn't need a novel before it. Ngl I've sat through some dad jokes where the setup was basically a short story and by the time he got to the punchline I'd already forgotten the beginning. Tbh it's way more impressive when someone can make you laugh with just a few words, that's a real skill. So yeah you changed my mind on this one, keep it tight and snappy every time.

Short jokes work better because they test if the setup is even worth telling.
