Lost 45 minutes to a joke that hinged on one word, and I still don't know if it works

I tried to build a joke about a broken pencil and could not land the punchline for 45 minutes because I kept swapping the wrong word in the setup. I finally wrote it out on a napkin at my kitchen table and said it out loud to my wife, and she just blinked at me. Does a pun this small even count for the weekly vote, or should I scrap it and start over?
