My 8 year old daughter finally laughed at my cheese pun today
She rolled her eyes and said "that was grate" with this tiny smirk. We were at the grocery store deli counter when I told her not to trust atoms because they make up everything.

That's the sweet spot where they start getting jokes but still have that hint of kid logic left. The groan-to-smile ratio never quite balances again once they figure out the formula.

It's wild how that same thing plays out in other areas too. Like when they first realize sarcasm exists, they just throw it at everything with zero subtlety. Or when they figure out board game strategies and suddenly you can't just let them win anymore without them knowing. The whole thing is basically watching them level up in real time until they start seeing all the seams in how things work.

Watching them piece together how stuff actually works is like seeing behind the curtain of your own life too. It makes you realize how many little systems you just accepted without thinking, you know?
