Overheard my son call a pun 'dad-level genius' and it hit me different

Was dropping my kid off at school last week and heard him tell his friend, 'My dad's pun about the broken elevator was actually dad-level genius.' I stood there for a second realizing how much work I put into those jokes. Every day I scan the morning news or what's in the fridge for pun bait. Now I'm wondering if anyone else here plans their puns around real events or just wings it?

Jumped right into the delivery route myself. I'll make a mental list of puns on the way to work based on stuff I saw on the news or what my wife's complaining about. The best ones come from real life though, like the time my kid said his math homework was 'pointless' and I hit him with 'oh, so you're working on the dot plot then.' He just stared at me like I was a ghost. Totally worth it.

...and honestly that's the really beautiful part about it though. You're not just making a joke, you're leaving a little piece of evidence that you pay attention to their world. When my daughter complained about her car's steering pulling to the right I told her "sounds like you need to take a left turn in your attitude" and she rolled her eyes but she told her mom later "dad actually knows what I'm talking about." That's the real payoff, not the groan. Planning means you're tuned into their lives enough to see the opening before they even know it's there.

Gotta say winging it is way more fun though, planning takes the joy out of the moment.
