Spent $60 on a laser level last month for hanging cabinets and it burned me when the beam drifted half an inch across the room by lunchtime, but returning it for a $150 self-leveling model saved my entire kitchen job since the line held steady all afternoon
Anyone else get burned by cheap laser levels that can't handle a little heat, or is it just me learning the hard way to spring for the good stuff?

honestly I kinda disagree. I've had a $40 laser level for like three years now and it's been fine for hanging cabinets and shelves. maybe I just got lucky but the beam on mine doesn't drift that much even when my garage hits 90 degrees. sometimes the cheap stuff works if you don't expect it to be perfect for every single situation.

Fair enough, but I've seen too many cheap ones fail mid-job to trust them.

Buddy of mine bought a cheap one from Harbor Freight and it drifted so bad he had to redo a whole shelf row.
