I told my cousin's kid that I was reading a thermometer at 45 degrees, and she asked why it took me so long. I meant the temperature outside, not the reading time, and suddenly the whole table is debating if it even counts as a dad joke. Tbh, you're overthinking this. A thermometer joke is simple. The kid just didn't get it, and the family turned it into a whole thing because that's what families do when there's nothing else to talk about. The grammar debate is your relatives being bored, not the joke being bad. And honestly, if you need to explain a pun for 45 minutes, that's on you for picking the wrong crowd.
