Tried the pun setup vs the classic one-liner at my kid's birthday party last night

I spent 10 minutes crafting this elaborate pun setup about a missing balloon, but all the kids just stared at me. Then my brother-in-law hit them with a quick 'Why did the banana go to the doctor?' one-liner and got ROARS of laughter from every kid there. I learned the HARD way at Chuck E. Cheese in Akron that kids under 10 just want short setups, not your fancy wordplay. Anyone else find certain crowd ages totally kill your best dad jokes?

Question why you're turning this into a science experiment. Kids laugh at anything if you deliver it right. I've seen a 6 year old lose it over a knock-knock joke that didn't even make sense. It's not the setup length or the type of joke, it's how you tell it. You probably just oversold the pun and came off as trying too hard. The brother-in-law probably just said it naturally without all that pressure.

Fair enough but hard disagree on this one. Kids that age have zero patience for a 30 second setup they can't follow, they need the punchline hitting them in the face before they even start fidgeting. Your delivery matters sure but the structure matters more when their attention span is shorter than a goldfish's memory.
