Unpopular opinion: your 'improvised' dad joke is just a regular joke and I can prove it
I bombed at my brother's 40th in Tulsa two weekends ago because I kept making up jokes on the spot instead of using the setup and punch format that actually makes a dad joke land. Then my uncle Ray rattled off 'I only know 25 letters of the alphabet, I don't know y' and the room lost it, and that's when it hit me. A real dad joke has to be short, clean, and groan worthy, not some long story where I explain the pun at the end. Now I write mine down in a notebook with the punchline locked in before I ever say it out loud. So what's the rule you swear by, setup and punch or just whatever gets a groan?
